THE CHEESE-STEAK CHALLENGE

Everyone has a goal in life, I have several, among them is finding the Ultimate Cheese-Steak in Greensboro. On this very page, you will find reviews of  Cheese-Steaks from as many local Greensboro Restaurants as possible. Please E-mail me if you know of anywhere with good (or bad) Cheese-Steaks! All of the Cheese-Steaks are rated on a scale of 1-10, based solely on taste ~ service, atmosphere, etc. play no part in the review; as Keith is so fond of saying: “Atmosphere don’t cook steak, unless its a hellish atmosphere of fire and death, but I’m not going to eat anywhere like that”

Current Champion - Lox Stock and Bagel

Elizabeth’s Pizza ~ 8.5

Elizabeth’s many not have very good pizza, but they’ve got a damn good Cheese-Steak. The amount of onions, pepper, and lettuce is perfect, neither too much nor to little of either.  Only two factors keep this beauty of a meal from getting a perfect score. 1 - First and foremost, the meat could have been a little better.  This isn’t to say that it wasn’t good, it definitely was, but it was a little bland in the taste. 2 - The cheese had the same fatal flaw; while it was quite good, it could have been better. All in all, this is monster is well worth a mere $6.50.  If ever your on Battleground, and get stuck in its ridiculous jumble of roads, stop lights and no turn signs, stop by and you won’t be disappointed.

Ham’s ~ 7.5

The exact opposite of Elizabeth’s. While its meat and cheese were fantastic, the peppers, onions, and lecture were excessive in quantity, and lacking in quality. Now you may be asking yourself, “If the cheese and the steak are good, and wouldn’t that make a good Cheese-Steak?” to answer your question - No.  While the cheese and the steak are arguably the most important part, theres a lot more too it then that.  You see, and Cheese-Steak is like a car - if you just have the car, but no gas, no oil, no water, etc. then your car won’t go anyway. In a Cheese-Steak, the cheese and the Steak are the car, and the bread, onions, peppers and lettuce are the fluids.  So in the end, Ham’s has a good Cheese-Steak, it just needs better quality gas.

~ 5

While Jay’s is a great resturant, and I throughly enjoy most of it’s food, it’s Cheese-Steak was a dissapointment. The first thing that I noticed about it though, was that it had really good cheese - almost as good as Ham’s. Despite that, everything else was pretty bland. The meat was simply mediocre, and I couldn’t even taste the onions or letuce. It was about average for a $4.95 sandwhich. But don’t get me wrong, Jay’s is a great place to eat, and if I was considering service and atmosphere in my rating system, it would get no less then a 7.5. But I’m not, so 5 it is. Stop by and Jay’s out if you get a chance, but don’t get the Cheese-Steak.

After

In a word - Wow. This is the best damn Cheese-Steak I’ve ever had. To quote Keith “I’m in Cheese-Steak heaven”. This definetly takes the title of Reigning Champion from Elizabeth’s. At first, I was skeptical. it looked like it had way too much letuce, and not nearly enough steak; but was I wrong. Not only was the letuce some of the best I’ve tasted in recent memory, and in perfect proportions to the rest of the sandwhich, but the steak was even better. It had just the right flavor, and was wraped perfectly around the cheese. The onions too were fresh and tasty. The only problem with this masterpiece was a minor one, that it could have used a little bit more cheese; but besides that, it was fantastic, and for only $4.50! One of the lowest prices I’ve come across yet. Lox Stock and Bagel is a great place to eat, one of the few places in Greensboro that calls itself a Deli and actually is. It’s on Battleground behind Omega Sports. What ever you do, be sure not to pass this up.
